Our Story | BAME Children's Books
We are more than just a bookshop.
Hello there and welcome to our shop! My name is Naomi Shakespeare and I am the founder of généraliste and our funky craft brand Kulture Kidz!
Founded in September 2018, we exist for one reason and one reason only. To make representative books, across the spectrum of the BAME community accessible to every child across the UK and beyond.
Growing up in a mixed race family, I grew up very aware of the struggle of identity and representation. When I had my own son in 2016, it became even more apparent to me. I couldn't find anywhere to buy diverse books! I spent hours, days, weeks and months trying to find them for my son. And you know what I found? They exist! There are hundreds, thousands of books available for our communities, there just have been limited places to buy them.
So here we are! Offering a curated mix of books, greeting cards and crafts, we want to give every child the chance to see themselves in the pages of a book, to dream, to love the skin they are in, to have compassion for others and know they are enough. We hope to bring smiles to both children's and parent's faces, and hopefully make the world a more understanding and embracing place.
Our books represent the best of the BAME community, and although we exist to serve our communities, we firmly believe that if every household, regardless of their colour, diversified their bookshelf, we would live in a much better world.
I hope you find the perfect gift for the child in your life and come back again soon!
